Mandy Hemphill is living her dream, running the successful Rose Cottage Cafe in Orchardville, Texas, from the ground floor of a converted, old—and possibly haunted—downtown home. She even had plans to grow her business with a new outdoor patio…if only the mayor wouldn’t have turned her down. So when the beloved mayor is found murdered, Mandy finds herself among the suspects. And now business at the cafe is dropping faster than a fallen soufflé. How can she prove her innocence and save the Rose Cottage Cafe? Thankfully Ben, the new owner of The Orchardville Gazette, doesn’t believe she’s guilty. As the two of them set out to find the real killer, they uncover one small-town lie after the next. But the closer they get to learning the truth about who killed the mayor, the more in danger they find themselves.
Sissy: Big Hair and Buttermilk pie is a good, tightly written cozy mystery read with plenty of interesting characters and Texas charm. I was sympathetic to Mandy and her desire to make her café successful. Rose Cottage Cafe sounded like a lovely, quaint breakfast or lunch destination, being inside a historic home and all. Just the sort of place I look for in my ramblings.
Bubby: It kind of reminds me of that place where we ate lunch on our last girl’s weekend, yes?
Sissy: Yes! I love places like that!
Bubby: Mandy, owner of the café and unfortunately also a suspect in the mayor’s murder, seemed like someone I’ve known for years. All the characters were so well written and true to small town life. I think I could buy a little house in Orchardville, Texas, eat my lunch at the Rose Cottage Cafe every day and be quite happy! Assuming no one tries to murder me, or blame a murder on me, of course!
Sissy: Murder does tend to be a buzz kill.
Bubby: Buzz kill? Was that a deliberate pun? If so, well done! (And yes, that was a deliberate rhyme because I’m clever like that!)
Sissy: Of course. I’m a literary genius. I taught you how to be clever. If I’m being perfectly honest, I was suspicious of Ben, not for the murder, but because he’s a reporter and was oh-so-friendly and nosy and always hanging about. As it turns out, he IS hiding something, but nothing too nefarious. He’ll have to prove himself to me if he shows up in the next book.
Bubby: Yes, I’m not as enamored with him as I was at first. We’ll have to see what happens there. The next book in the Rose Cottage Cafe Mysteries is Sweet Tea and Sass Talk. The excerpt looks quite interesting!
Sissy: I’m excited to read Mandy’s next adventure and see what happens with Ben, if anything. In the meantime, I think Bubby and I are gonna talk all Southern and bake us up some buttermilk pie (from the recipe in the back of the book).
Bubby: Yes ma’am we are. I have a hankerin’ to try the peach and pecan muffins (also from the back of the book) as well! Don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter contest below for a chance to win a copy of the book and your very own buttermilk pie, shipped to you directly from Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in Franklin, Tennessee.
