Bubby: It’s so hot here. Seriously. 100+ degrees every day for several weeks. My dog just lays around in the shade, my kids refuse to go outside and all my landscaping is dry and thirsty, except for my rose bushes. I don’t know why, but they seem to be thriving in the infernal heat. So, since Sissy is on vacation this week, I decided that I would pay tribute to my beautiful roses and feature 3 of my favorite rose-themed books. I’d say that you should grab one of these books and a glass of lemonade and head out to the hammock but you’d probably die of heat stroke, so ditch the hammock in favor of the chair that’s closest to the air conditioning vent and read until it cools off!
The Rose Girls by Victoria Connelly
Sisters Celeste, Gertie and Evie try to restore their decrepit family manor whilst pumping new life into their rose business. If you love roses, England, sisterhood or just great stories, The Rose Girls is the book for you.
Beauty by Robin McKinley
You all know the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, right? This is my favorite version of the story. All the elements are there, just in a subtly different manner than the original. And this was written long before Disney came up with Belle and Gaston, so don’t expect dancing teapots and cups here!
Tending Roses by Lisa Wingate
“The secret to a happy life is not in getting what you want. It is learning to want what you get. Don’t waste your time crying over what you’re not given. When you have tears in your eyes, you can’t see all the beautiful things around you.” This is just one of many nuggets of wisdom from Grandma Rose. This is a story about love, loss, and faith in the hard times. Happy ending guaranteed, of course!
