Business as usual for mid-century modern interior decorator Madison Night involves a rundown ranch restoration and a product endorsement for the local paint store. But when an investigation into a string of recent abductions turns up a murder vic, and evidence at the scene links the flirtatious Lt. Tex Allen to the crime, Madison’s priorities shift faster than she can say “Doris Day.” Voluntary suspension keeps Tex off the case, and pesky reporters force him to live in his car. Madison’s own life is complicated by the return of her hunky handyman and her new demanding client. She immerses herself in routine, but suspects come out of the freshly-painted woodwork. When seemingly unrelated events lead back to the abductions, she exposes a secondary agenda, a copycat crime, and a vengeful plot to destroy someone she loves.
Bubby: Something about the retro flair of the Mad for Mod mysteries really appeals to me. The mid-century fashions with all the uber feminine details are my absolute favorite. I wouldn’t actually want to go back and live then or be forced to wear the clothes myself, but our heroine Madison Knight does it with such panache!
Sissy: I think we mentioned in a previous review of Pillow Stalk, the first book in the series, that mid-century furnishings don’t appeal to us, but I love how Madison uses them and how Diane Vallere describes everything. And of course the whole Doris Day tie-in…so “mad” for that! I also am happy to report that the romance thing is reaching a delightful resolution!! I’m not going to tell you how, but after getting really confusing and convoluted with Madison’s non-commital mindset, there is direction!
Bubby: I’ll just say that I am pleased with Madison’s choice and leave it at that. The mystery is a little more sinister this time, and there are some excellent convolutions to the plot.
Sissy: Excellent convolutions–brilliantly said, Bubby. Life is full of excellent convolutions, right? Also present are controlly creepers and shady shysters. This edition of Mad for Mod is fully satisfying!
