Sissy: Do you have women in your life who love a good book? I, being one of those, can’t think of a better escape during the Christmas holidays than something fabulous to read. For that matter, when the season is over and the January doldrums arrive, I also need a lively tale to cheer my life. So, as a subject matter expert, I can tell you that a book gift is a great idea for your mom, aunt, sister, girlfriend, (add relevant woman here) etc. And we are more than willing to help you choose them!
Bubby: Yes, it is never a problem for Sissy and I to tell people what to do! First on our list is First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen, which we reviewed here. It is a perfect blend of romance, family, and magic. I think First Frost will definitely be on my list of favorites for 2015.
Sissy: Mine too! If your significant female likes historical fiction mixed with some contemporary and romance, she’ll love My Brother’s Crown by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould. The combination of historical and modern-day story lines made this book totally engaging. Read our review here (and see how rude Bubby was to me that day).
Bubby: You totally deserved it, but since this is the season of light, peace, and love, I’ll let it go. In The Traveling Tea Shop by Belinda Jones (reviewed here) we find a mix of my own personal favorite things (no, not whiskers on kittens or warm woolen mittens)–delicious confections and British accents. I swear I gained 10 pounds just reading this book, but it was completely worth it.
Sissy: Speaking of British things, our next book, The Rose Girls, is set in England, and is the story of three sisters trying to save their crumbling manor house, their business, their relationships, and their personal romances (original review here). Sometimes Bubby and I think that if we don’t get to go to England soon we’ll die, but lovely tales like The Rose Girls keep us happily appeased. For awhile, anyway.
Bubby: Last but not least is The Life Intended by Kristin Harmel, which gives us a glimpse into the world of “what if.” Like, what if Sissy hadn’t been gifted with a delightful baby sister? Would she now be a wino in the gutter? Probably. Luckily, she has me, and fabulous books like this. We loved this book (reviewed here) for the beautiful writing and for the message that those loved ones that we have lost are still with us, if only in our dreams.
Sissy: Bubby, sweet sister who has saved me from being a drunk in a ditch, what if people have other book gifting needs, like books for teens, or books for old curmudgeonly relatives?
Bubby: We’ll be featuring specific lists all week: Books for Teen Girls, Teen boys, for mature women (which feature protagonists of a “certain age”), and non-book gifts for anyone who loves to read. As far as the curmudgeonly relatives, shoot me an email and I’ll tell you what I’m getting for Sissy.
